The untoward warm February has Jim twirling in indecision about whether to be direct seeding in the fields, seeding in the green house, or continuing to seed in his new "seedling room" in the Kapus Granary. We checked a pea seed in the field and it has put down a long tap root, so the early planting looks like a good gamble. Two beds of spinach are seeded, and ground is ready for bok choy and chinese cabbage. We're resisting the temptation to disk all the cover crops under and have the whole farm prepared, in case the rains return and leach all our good efforts away. We've moved the green house away from the barn to discourage mouse seed predation. We used lengths of two inch pipe for rollers and 2x6 boards as rails to roll the green house across the pasture, in the style of Egyptian slaves moving blocks of stone for the pyramids (another coggle by Jim). Amid all this we juggle the distractions of ailing pets and the threat of the Salmon Creek frontage lot next door being developed. We've alerted the State to the pileated wood pecker (model for "Woody") habitat, but in the end we may have to buy it to save it. Any habitat investors out there?
