Today's Share - July 1st

Posted: July 1st, 2009 @ 6:20pm

Dear CSA-ers,

Today's share should include:

2 pounds (count them) 2 pounds of sugar snap peas
1 pound of new potatoes (desiree- red with yellow flesh)
An assortment of medium to small lettuces
20 collard leaves (about a half to 3/4 of apound)

Town shares have about a quarter to a half a pound of broccoli

Farm shares have about a quarter pound of mustard greens and six radishes. (mustard greens are at the top of the sack).

PEA     PONDS  AND POTATOES A LA MEXICANA Last night we adapted a Mexican salad that usually has potatoes and green bean by substituting sugar snap pea pods for the beans.

Boil some potatoes (for better flavor and nutrition, boil them whole and cut them up after, if you have time).  Set aside to cool.

Cut pea pods into bite size pieces

Make or buy a vinagrette or Italian salad dressing.

Marinate the peas and potatoes in the dressing, sprinkle chopped cilantro over all as a garnish.

FARM UPDATE

Up until today we have had relatively mild high temperatures, which has kept the spring greens and the peas pretty happy.  The lows on the other hand have been a bit extreme.  We just planted out the cucumbers the other day, and that was with some trepidation, with lows in the forties.  Jim set out some plastic row covers to cover them at night if it continued to be so cold.  Last night he got tired and didn't put them on, and woke up to 42 degrees.  We think they will survive, but weren't any better for the experience.  Diane has committed to not letting Jim slack on his duties hence forth.

Until next week, bon appetit!
